Aria and Vdara take Reservations

Written by Jason on February 27, 2009 – 4:23 pm -

I traveled to Vegas the other day to report on the status of City Centers newest ventures into the luxury top of the line offerings in the hotel market. WOW! Aria and Vdara! Spectacular appointments, incredible views, but of course everything surrounding is unfinished. In other words NOW is the time to stay here for a super cheap check it out early rate BUT it will not be the complete world class experience that it will be later when all the retail stores, and other hotels like the 400 room Mandarin Oriental Hotel opens. Project 3355 is an early competitor to the residential offerings at City Center like Veer Towers.

Mt. Potosi seen from Las Vegas

Written by kelly on February 18, 2009 – 8:05 am -

Instead of the doing the usual for Valentine’s Day my husband and I hiked Potosi Mountain. Potosi Mtn. is about 25 miles west of the Silverton Hotel and Casino. Potosi Mtn. is known best for the 1942 plane crash that was carrying Carol Lombard as well as some other passengers. Some of the wreckage is still laying around too. Because it had just snowed the night before and our van is heavy and we don’t have nobby tires we parked right off of Highway 160 (Blue Diamond) and started walking. The ground, the plants, and the trees were heavy with snow and it was beautiful. The sky was blue and the temperature was perfect for our 3 mile ascent. Mt. Potosi topography is complex and surrounded by limestone cliffs. There are a number of mines and shelter caves. There is a two mile section of the road that is private property which was awkward when we were told that we were walking on private property and there were no trespassing signs on every other tree. However, if you keep a very low profile you shouldn’t get harassed too much but keep your vehicle moving. Eventually you will get to BLM land where there are other parking areas. The views at the peak are excellent. There is a lot to explore on Mt. Potosi and the total hike to the wreckage and back is 9 miles as well as being a category 4 in difficulty. We did not hike the entire 6+ hours but in the spring we are planning to return. I would like to see some big horn sheep next time.

Colton Odom launches ColtonOdom.com

Written by Jason on February 17, 2009 – 12:23 pm -

My nephew Colton Odom lives back in my home state of Florida and is making quite a name for himself. He is being heavily recruited by 6 different colleges including the University of Florida and the University of Miami. And he is just a high school junior. It may have something to do with the fact he is a 6 foot 5, 300 pound offensive tackle! He attended the U.S. Army Combine for the top 500 Juniors in the nation in January and is in the selection process to be picked for the televised U.S. Army All American Bowl game in 2010. You can check him out at ColtonOdom.com before he gets really popular and you can’t even afford to watch him on the big screens in the Vegas Sports Bars.

Stratosphere Poker Room Review

Written by Jason on February 17, 2009 – 12:05 pm -

I needed to review the poker room at the Stratosphere Casino and Hotel in Las Vegas so I have played in a few tournaments here. I won 4 ranging from chopped first place to couple 3d place finishes. This tournament can be very fast with 20 minute blinds and tourists going all in quickly so pros will probably not like it. My biggest problem is with the economy being as bad as it is they are having trouble competing with the big rooms like Caesars and the Venetian. Even the Sahara which runs a similar tournament has more entrants. Now when you play cash you only need a few fish at the table and all is well but for a tournament to be worthwhile you need at least 4-5 tables. Many times I have visited the poker room at the Strat only to find that the there were not enough people to even have one full table. Now my times wasted and thats not fun. The room has about 20 tables. Staff are nice and fair. Bathrooms are within 100 feet and the exit doors if you park across the street are only about 140 feet away. You can get table side orders for food. The room tends to be noisy due to the slots and karaoke coming from Roxy’s Diner. Many times I have tried to get in a cash game while waiting for a tournament to start only to not even be able to do that. Sometimes too few. Sometimes too many. This place is fun but just hit and miss so if you are staying here great. Run down and check the conditions. Otherwise if you want more serious poker look elsewhere.
