Boardwalk Hotel and Casino Las Vegas

Boardwalk Hotel and Casino Las Vegas is now closed. It started out as a gift shop in 1972 and became a casino in 1977. The hotel was closed in January 2006 and imploded on May 9, 2006. It was torn down to make way for the "Project City Center."

One of its great advantages was its location. The Boardwalk Hotel and Casino Las Vegas was situated in the heart of the Strip between the Monte Carlo and the Bellagio across the boulevard from the MGM Grand. Mirage Resorts acquired it in 1997.

The Boardwalk had a Coney Island theme. Built before the mega resort era, it was not what you would call a large luxury resort. In total it had 654 rooms and by most guests was considered clean. When staying in the tower you could get a fantastic view of the Bellagio. Rooms did include a safe and refrigerator.

Although it was a budget hotel, the rooms were larger than those at the Casino Royale next to Harrah's. For roughly the same price you could stay at the Imperial Palace, the Tropicana, the "Golden Nugget" or the The Orleans. Originally the hotel had 3 different buildings built at different times. In 1996 the newest of the towers was built and was 16 stories high. There was a 6 story building called the Steeplechase and the original building was 4 stories high and known as Luna Park.

It was famous for its parachute ride built in 1906 and infamous for its wooden roller coaster which did not work. Before being torn down visitors would still enter the casino and insist on trying to ride the roller coaster. It wasn't as up-to-date as the roller coasters at the Sahara or the New York, New York.

The Boardwalk Hotel and Casino Las Vegas was known for its low limit tables, anywhere from $2-$5. It was one of the best kept secrets when compared to the table minimums in its neighboring mega resorts. The Race and Sports Book was not tiny, consisting of 75 seats.

The hotel was famous for having the only 24 hour buffet on the Strip. Unfortunately, it was also infamous for being the worst buffet in town. People became seriously ill after eating there on many occasions. It also had a sushi bar and several other restaurants. Other amenities include a wedding gazebo and 2 small pools at the Boardwalk Hotel and Casino Las Vegas.
